Kearney Donald Partnership were commissioned to design 2 no. self catering lodges for the top end of the market. The clients site was an open area of hillside with spectacular views south over the sea towards the island of Mull. The lodges were to be a three bedroomed and a one bedroomed.
The client's brief stated that the lodges were to be as “green” as possible and to utilise local large spruce logs for the main structure.
The design therefore utilises a post and beam structure exposed through all the main living areas. The orientation of the hillside allowed us to have generous glazed areas facing south to maximise solar gain.
Each of the main living areas features double volume heights with full height double glazed gables.
Each unit has underfloor heating throughout the ground floor and first floor bathrooms. The lodges are heated using underground heat source and solar panels. Each lodge also has a feature solid fuel fireplace.
The clients have since been awarded a silver grading from the Green Tourism Scheme.
