Our brief was to convert an unused boathouse into a small restaurant (30 covers) with toilet and shower facilities that could be utilised by yachtsmen and women mooring nearby.
The existing building had a first floor over the boat store with an adjoining wing at a different level again. The building was stone built with cement render under a slate roof.
The building was completely refurbished with the roof re-slated, render removed from the external walls and the stone below left exposed and repointed. Internally an independent timber frame was installed with high performance insulation boards between the timber studs. The roof and floor over the boat store were insulated also. New services were installed with electric heating and a solid fuel stove fitted.
A small extension was added to the landward side to provide a bigger kitchen area and a new entrance and cloaks area. The restaurant, kitchen, entrance and disabled toilets are at 1st floor level but with direct access from the car park on the landward side.
The toilets and showers are contained within the adjoining wing at a slightly lower level and with direct access to the outside.
A feature balcony was added to the front gable cantilevered over the water’s edge. Steel and glass handrail and balustrade maximise the views across the loch to the mountains beyond.
Externally the area around the boathouse was remodelled providing new car parking and access to the existing jetty. The area around the car park has been landscaped in line with the natural foreshore of the surrounding area.
The restaurant has been opened for over a year and despite its very rural location is proving to be a great success.
